Space: 1999: Breakaway
Wednesday Jan 27, 2016
Wednesday Jan 27, 2016
Join Scott and Steve as they party like it's 1999 and review "Breakaway" the first episode of an oft-forgotten campy piece of 70s science fiction: Space: 1999! From its strangely placed funky theme song, to its bland, impractical uniforms, they talk about it all! Listen as they detail the adventure of the newly appointed Moonbase Alpha commander, John Koenig and Dr. Helena Russell (played by a disgruntled Martin Landau and his, at the time, wife, Barbara Bain), as they attempt to solve the mystery of the cleverly named "Meta-probe astronaut virus infection" (which also might be radiation or magnetism) and...oh yeah, while they are working on the case, THE ENTIRE MOON breaks away from Earth's orbit! They'll also discuss the show's rocky start, from personal problems among the cast and crew to technical issues in the filming and production, and how this entire series was really intended to be another season of the previously failed sci-fi series "UFO". So zip up your sleeve, grab a cup of introspective tea, and laugh at the future of 1999 with us!

They'll also discuss the mobile game "Pocket Mortys" and its connections to this episode, the popular comic books based on this series, as well as some crossovers with Gravity Falls and The Simpsons. From the easter eggs you may have missed, to pancakes' syrup absorption rates, to visiting some parallel universes of their own, Hamish and Scott cover it all! So sit back on a human, use your pizza to order a tasty phone, and enjoy the show! Wubba Lubba Dub Dub!

30 Rock: Black Tie
Tuesday Jan 12, 2016
Tuesday Jan 12, 2016
Join Lily and Scott as they review "Black Tie", a hilarious episode from the Emmy winning first season of one of television's greatest comedies: 30 Rock! Listen as they chart the origins of the series, from Saturday Night Live head writer Tina Fey's proposed sitcom about a cable news network to almost getting shelved by a pair of NBC executives. They'll also discuss the uproarious yet tragic character of Prince Gerhard, a sickly European noble (played by Paul Rubens) who falls in love with his birthday party crasher Jenna, the volatile ex-wife of Jack (played by Isabella Rossallini), and how Kenneth and Tracy play the metaphorical angel and devil on Pete Hornberger's tired shoulders. From the star-studded cast of Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, and Jack McBrayer, to the great tone set by great music and the bustling New York City setting, it's no wonder why it's considered one of the all-time greats. So celebrate your body and your mind, have a glass of champagne (if you can safely metabolize grapes) and enjoy the show!

Saturday Nov 21, 2015
Saturday Nov 21, 2015
Join Scott and Star Wars expert Paul for this BONUS EPISODE of Hitting Play as they breakdown every detail of the latest trailer for the most anticipated film of the year, Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens! Just after Scott and Paul analyzed a new batch of trailers in our previous episode, J.J. Abrams and crew released a brand new TV spot with loads of new footage! This new trailer, called "TV Spot 5" is being described as "Finn-centric" and offers new glimpses at the character of Finn and his journey from disillusioned stormtrooper to apprehensive hero to potential Jedi. In addition to discussing this new look at the movie, Scott and Paul will also discuss some other details about the movie that the internet has found and speculated on, including: the many flags and symbols of Maz Kanata's castle, if Rey's home is an old AT-AT, new improvements to the tie fighter design, and if the recent Vanity Fair magazine reveals a clue about Boba Fett. So much to talk about, and surely, more to come! May the sequels be with you!

Monday Nov 16, 2015
Monday Nov 16, 2015
Join Scott and Star Wars expert Paul as they breakdown every little detail of not one, not two, but THREE new trailers for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens! (We know, we know, we thought we were done with these too!) Three trailers that offered many new interesting clues, and raised new questions as well. First, they discuss the trailer aired that during ABC's Thursday Night "TGIT" block, (including some ridiculous testimonials by the casts of various ABC dramas.) They'll talk about Finn and Rey's introduction to one another, additional clues to Finn's origin as an escaped stormtrooper, and a new scene of the resistance base. Next, they'll discuss the Japanese trailer, including what new intriguing clues can be gathered by translating the Japanese subtitles. Especially one potentially huge line not heard in English. And finally, they breakdown the new 30 second TV spot, and how its very short scenes can still tell us quite a lot about the characters and their locations during the movie. Then, combining all of these new clues, they'll discuss Maz Kanata's role in the Star Wars saga, what her cryptic lines of dialogue mean, if Finn is the new successor to Anakin and Luke, and much, much more! (Oh, they talk about the new posters too!) Does Rey live in an old AT-AT? Do podracers' flags from The Phantom Menace make an appearance? Is our favorite fishy admiral back? They talk about it! May the sequels be with you!
