Avengers: United They Stand: Command Decision
Friday Dec 06, 2019
Friday Dec 06, 2019
Join Scott and Hamish as they continue their look at the Marvel animated series of the 90s and watch an episode of what some call the worst Marvel cartoon ever made: “Avengers: United They Stand”. Imagine if The Avengers we’re saving the world in the future, and had to wear hideous transforming robot suits of armor. Oh, and also Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor aren’t even on the team. Who would lead the team, then? Why, none other than Ant-Man! The fun-loving Scott Lang Ant-Man? No, the perpetually angry and insecure Hank Pym Ant-Man! And it just keeps getting better from there! Listen as they breakdown the episode “Command Decision”, a very special story where Captain America randomly shows up to help the Avengers fight Baron Zemo and his “Masters of Evil”. They’ll discuss the making of this series, how closely connected it is to the rest of the Marvel animated series of the 1990s, and why it pales in comparison to the shows that came before it. They’ll also detail the origins of the characters in the comics, and talk about why this show was little more than a half-hour commercial for a new line of action figures. So put on your futuristic armor, and grab a hot cup of coffee, because you’re gonna need it! Hey! Where’s that coffee?!

Monday Sep 09, 2019
Join Scott and Hamish as they take a warp pipe back to 1989, a time when the Super Mario Brothers had their own television show that was a unique blend of both live-action and animation: "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!" Listen as they break down and review both parts of the show’s 62nd episode: the live-action segments starring Rowdy Roddy Piper entitled “Rowdy Roddy’s Rotten Pipes” and the cartoon “Crocodile Mario”. They’ll discuss the humble beginnings of the Mario Bros. franchise and its surprisingly small history in television, as well as the many changes and adjustments to this short-lived, yet long running show. They’ll talk about the over-the-top acting by not only a very angry Rowdy Roddy Piper, but also by Captain Lou Albano and Danny Wells, playing the very nervous Mario brothers, and why it all adds to the delightful ridiculousness of the episode. They’ll also discuss why the Crocodile Dundee-inspired cartoon segment “Crocodile Mario”, featuring our heroes taking a trip to “Down Under Land” not only terribly misrepresents many aspects of Australian culture, but also the physics of the universe as well! From bagpipe-playing vacuum cleaners to reptile-repelling statues resembling popular actors of the 80s, this one has it all! (Well, maybe not “all”, but a bunch of weird stuff anyway.) It's an episode packed with very confusing story logic with many, many questions, but unfortunately our answers are in another castle. So throw a pizza on the barbie, keep your plunger handy, and laugh along with us! C'mon, do the Mario!

Fantastic Four (1994): To Battle the Living Planet
Friday May 17, 2019
Friday May 17, 2019
Join Scott and Hamish as they take a special two-part look at Marvel’s mid-90s Saturday morning cartoon block: The Marvel Action Universe! More specifically, the Marvel Action Universe block that aired on the morning of November 4, 1995.
In this episode (part two), they review and breakdown “To Battle The Living Planet”, an episode of Fantastic Four in which the team gets summoned by Thor to help fight Ego, a gigantic purple, sentient living planet that is mad at Earth! Oh, and if that wasn’t a big enough story, there’s cameos from members of the Avengers and the New Warriors and even Galactus joins the fight! Listen as they discuss the history of the Fantastic Four in comics, television, and film, and how they’re slowly making a comeback. They’ll talk about how this series, much like Iron Man, was disliked by critics for its first season, leading to many changes for season two. They’ll compare this version of Ego to his appearance as the main antagonist of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, how the Marvel Animated Universe of the 90s was as connected as the Marvel Cinematic Universe of today, the Toybiz toy line that was released for the show, and much, much more! Plus: Scott puts batteries in his Galactus toy for the first time in almost 20 years to see what sounds it makes, and Hamish and Scott re-enact the page from Fantastic Four comics that made fun of this cartoon! So wash the goo off your shoes, grab a slice of skyscraper cake, and dare to mock the living planet along with us! Excelsior!

Iron Man (1994): Iron Man, On the Inside

Tuesday Apr 02, 2019
Join Scott and Hamish as they take a special two-part look at Marvel’s mid-90s Saturday morning cartoon block: The Marvel Action Universe! More specifically, the Marvel Action Universe block that aired on the morning of November 4, 1995.
In this episode (part one), they review and breakdown “Iron Man, On the Inside”, an episode of Iron Man: The Animated Series in which Tony Stark shrinks down to microscopic size to perform surgery on Hawkeye’s spine. Listen as they discuss the history of the character of Iron Man from the comics and the members of his short lived Avengers offshoot team, Force Works. They’ll talk about the show’s initial poor reception and what big changes were made for season two, and for the entire block as well. Getting into the episode, they’ll talk about how this episode pretty much copied elements from the films Fantastic Voyage and Innerspace, why the villain’s plan to use the giant android Ultimo was really stupid, why Tony Stark isn’t a good friend and much, much more! So slip into something less comfortable, grab a bowl of peppered popcorn and shake your head along with us! “I...AM...!”

Animaniacs: Yakko's World/Cookies for Einstein/Win Big
Wednesday Oct 11, 2017
Wednesday Oct 11, 2017
Join Scott, Shawn and Jonah as they take a look back at one of the most sharp and irreverent cartoons of the 90's: "Animaniacs"! Listen as they breakdown and review the second episode of the series, featuring Yakko singing a somewhat accurate list of countries in the classic segment "Nations of the World", the Warner brothers (and Warner sister) trying to earn merit badges in Switzerland by selling Kid Scout cookies to a frustrated Albert Einstein in "Cookies For Einstein", and our introduction to two genetically altered lab mice named Pinky and The Brain who attempt to take home prize money on a TV quiz show in "Win Big". They'll talk about the history of the series from a Fox Kids cartoon with Steven Spielberg's backing to a mainstay of Kids WB, and possibly beyond. They'll also point out some of the loving references to old Hollywood, nitpick Yakko's idea of which lands are actually nations, reveal the big secret behind Pinky and The Brain's big scheme, and much, much more! So grab a box of cookies and a cup of Swiss Miss, turn off Wheel of Misfortune and get zany to the max with us! Hellooooooooooo Nurse!!!
(And also, Shawn takes a couple of minutes at the end to share his thoughts on Star Trek: Discovery.)

Tuesday Sep 12, 2017
Tuesday Sep 12, 2017
Join Scott, Kevin, and Hamish as they welcome special guest Lucas to help them review and breakdown the highly controversial Brazil-themed episode of The Simpsons: "Blame It On Lisa"! Listen as Lucas gives his unique perspective on the many aspects of his home country portrayed in the episode. They'll talk about the popularity of The Simpsons in Brazil, the backlash this episode received, if Lisa's travel tips for Homer are true, the massive celebrity status of Xuxa, and lots of talk about Brazilian food and culture! Why did this episode anger an entire nation? Pour yourself some guarana soda, enjoy some rodízio from the local churrascaria and find out! Aproveite o show! Abóbora! Cogumelo!

The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang: May the Farce Be with You
Saturday Aug 26, 2017
Saturday Aug 26, 2017
Join Scott, Hamish, and Kevin for a look back at a cartoon with one of the worst premises in the history of television: the atrocious "Happy Days" animated sci-fi spinoff "The Fonz and The Happy Days Gang"! Listen as they breakdown and review the second episode of the series, "May the Farce Be With You", in which The Fonz, Ritchie Cunningham, Ralph Malph, the anthropomorphic dog Mr. Cool, and a super-powered girl from the 25th century named Cupcake accidentally travel to outer space in the year 2057 and try to stop an alien robot queen from destroying the earth with a laser beam. (Y'know, like a typical Happy Days story!) They'll talk about Garry Marshall's wildly popular sitcom "Happy Days" and how even its infamous "jumping the shark" moment wasn't as bad as this abysmal Saturday morning cartoon. From logic-bending powers and an incomprehensible plot to lackluster action and an intro by none other than famed disc jockey Wolfman Jack, this has everything you don't want in a TV show. So pull the lever, fire up those star jets, and endure this mess with us! Ayyyyyyyyyyyy!

Mister T: Mystery of the Golden Medallions
Thursday Aug 03, 2017
Thursday Aug 03, 2017
Join Scott and Kevin as they take a look back an an obscure Hanna-Barbera cartoon centered around a larger-than-life character who was a real-life pop culture powerhouse: "Mister T"! Listen as they breakdown the glorious episode "Mystery of the Golden Medallions", in which gymnastics coach Mr. T leads his team around the unrealistically steep streets of San Francisco and attempt to solve a convoluted mystery involving gold chains (not his, amazingly), a missing little brother, and stolen video game programming-all while struggling to welcome a new gymnast to the team: Woody Daniels, played by Phil Lamarr in his first credited role! They'll also discuss some of the strange supporting characters such as the annoying Spike, the disturbing Dozer, Jeff the idiot, and many more! From inaccurate math and physics that is totally bananas, to a head scratching plot and hilarious animation mistakes, this has it all! So engage your emergency brake, hide your gold jewelry, and shake your head back and forth in bewilderment along with us! Pity us fools!

Beavis and Butt-Head: The Great Cornholio
Wednesday Apr 12, 2017
Wednesday Apr 12, 2017
Join Scott and Shawn as they take a look back at one of the quintessential cartoons of the 90's: Beavis and Butt-Head! And of course, if you only had to pick one episode of Beavis and Butt-Head to watch, it's the one being reviewed in this week's episode: "The Great Cornholio"! An episode with big pop culture significance. So much so that it changed the word "bunghole" forever. Listen as they detail the history of the show, from a short called Frog Baseball made by a former physics student named Mike Judge, to a long running and beloved series on MTV, to a full-length feature film, to a one season only revival in 2011. They'll talk about the issues with the home video releases, including what was cut from this episode, their own experiences with the show growing up in the 90's, and what exactly made this show about two stupid high school aged losers so hilarious and special. So devour some candy, down a six pack of root beer, pull your collar over your head, and look for TP along with us!

Star Wars: Droids: The Revenge of Kybo Ren
Tuesday Mar 21, 2017
Tuesday Mar 21, 2017
Join Scott and Hamish as they take a look back at an episode of an often forgotten chapter of the Star Wars saga: "Star Wars: Droids!" Listen as they breakdown and review the eighth episode "The Revenge of Kybo Ren". They'll talk all about the chronology of the series, the status of its canonicity, and especially the curious character of the space pirate Kybo Ren, whose name seems way too similar to "Kylo Ren" to be just a coincidence. Does this cartoon have anything to do with the movies? How did C3PO and R2D2 have these adventures independent of the other cinematic characters? Did George Lucas change anything for the home video release? Wait, why is there a Klingon ship in this?! They'll answer all of these, and much much more! So wheel yourself space cake, disable your green force field, and laugh along at whatever this cartoon was trying to do! Bleep bloop!
