Wednesday Nov 30, 2016
Wednesday Nov 30, 2016
Join Shawn and Scott as they breakdown and review "Hi Diddle Riddle", the pilot episode of the iconic 1966 series "Batman"! Listen as they discuss the brilliance of Adam West, playing Batman as a serious detective despite the show's lighthearted campiness. They'll also discuss Batman and Robin's first adversary of the series, The Riddler, played masterfully by the great Frank Gorshin. From The Riddler's near-impossible (but always quickly solved) riddles and Batman's penchant for labeling everything, to interesting facts about the cast and two rare mentions of the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents, they discuss it all, and much, much more!!! Oh, and if that wasn't enough...the "Batusi" also makes an appearance! So sit back with some fresh-squeezed orange juice, disconnect the red telephone, and speed into Gotham along with us! Na-na na-na na-na na-na na Batman!
And don't worry! We won't leave you hanging! Look out for our episode about part two of the story, "Smack in the Middle": Same Bat-time, Same Bat-podcast!

"The Andy Kaufman Incident"
Wednesday Nov 23, 2016
Wednesday Nov 23, 2016
Join Scott as he takes a special look back at an interesting live television event that took place on the night of February 20, 1981. A late night sketch comedy show invited one of the most unique comedians of the time to host the episode. In the last sketch of the night, the host refused to act, resulting in a physical altercation on live television. Was this a real fight, started by a host with a reputation for his subversive behavior? Or was the whole thing planned ahead of time as a way to shock the TV audience? This week, Hitting Play delves into the sketch from ABC's show "Fridays" that later came to be known as "The Andy Kaufman Incident"!

Australia", but he warmly embraces this hilarious take on New England life and culture! They'll talk all about the unique Jordan's Furniture stores, the New England Patriots and their various scandals, Paul Revere, traffic, Make Way For Ducklings, candlepin bowling, Quincy Market, Newbury Comics, and so much more! The MAD Magazine TV Special
Wednesday Oct 12, 2016
Wednesday Oct 12, 2016
Join Scott for a look back at a failed pilot made by one of comedy's most enduring properties: MAD Magazine! Listen as he details the interesting history of MAD Magazine, starting out as a comic book in the 1950's, then making the switch to the magazine format to avoid conforming to the Comics Code after publisher William Gaines' testimony before congress. He'll talk about ABC's commissioning this pilot in 1974 and why it ultimately never aired. He'll also breakdown the many segments in this special, from shorts by Don Martin and Antonio Prohias' Spy vs. Spy, to longer features like Mort Drucker's Godfather parody "The Odd Father" and others from "the usual gang of idiots". And if that wasn't enough, you'll also get the history of MAD's other forays into television, and the mysterious origins of MAD Magazine icon Alfred E. Neuman. So get ready to say "What, me worry?", as you listen to this page turning episode of the podcast. (And don't forget the fold-in at the end!)

Wednesday Oct 05, 2016
Wednesday Oct 05, 2016
Join Scott and Lily as they breakdown "Space Madness" and "The Boy Who Cried Rat", two hilarious stories from a classic episode of "The Ren & Stimpy Show"! Listen as they detail the tumultuous history of Ren and Stimpy, from the masterful early episodes with creator John K. at the helm, to Nickelodeon's split with John K., the banned episode, and even the much maligned Spike TV series "Ren and Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon". They'll discuss the great moments of "Space Madness", including its retro sci-fi look, it's wonderful musical accompaniment, and of course, Ren's descent into madness. From there, they'll discuss the hilarious "The Boy Who Cried Rat!", Ren and Stimpy's homage to Tom and Jerry, and other classic cartoon predecessors. And if that wasn't enough, they'll also breakdown two great shorts included in the episode: a commercial for the nauseating breakfast cereal, Sugar Frosted Lumps, and Ren and Stimpy's strange preparations for Yak Shaving Day. This episode has it all! So finish your kitty stew paste, get your toaster helmet strapped on, and go mad with us! (Thanks for hitting play, and not the history eraser button!)

Double Dare
Wednesday Aug 24, 2016
Wednesday Aug 24, 2016
Join Shawn and Scott as they take another look at the early messy days of Nickelodeon and discuss the quintessential kids game show: Double Dare! Listen as they review a hilarious episode from the show's first year, 1986, in which two teams of kids faced off for a chance to take on the hallowed, chocolate sauce covered Double Dare obstacle course and win a treasure trove of very 1980's prizes! (Including an answering machine and Rod Stewart VHS!) They'll review some of the questions asked to the competitors (play along!), detail the various physical challenges, and laugh at the many flaws of this early production. Then, they'll discuss the 1988 direct-to-video special "Double Dare: Inside Scoop", which features host Marc Summers, along with announcer Harvey, presenting some of the best moments of the show's history. They'll talk about Marc Summers' audition, the first pre-air test episode, tricks to winning challenges, and how one early obstacle had to be replayed four times! And if that wasn't enough, Shawn and Scott also tell their stories of seeing some members of Double Dare cast in person when they were kids! So get ready for an auditory obstacle course: On your mark...get set...GO!

Listen as they breakdown each short, from the crazy creepiness of Mr. B to the annoying lessons of Coily the Spring Sprite. The Simpsons (Shorts): Good Night
Wednesday Jul 06, 2016
Wednesday Jul 06, 2016
Join Lily and Scott as they take a look back to a pivotal point in the history of television. A time when a successful producer returned to television and helped a talented British actress with her sketch comedy show by approaching a comic strip artist with the idea of creating some animated shorts. Those cartoons increased in popularity to the point hat they were spun-off into their own show, where they've been a household name for almost three decades: The Simpsons! Listen as they breakdown the very first Simpsons short ever to air on The Tracey Ullman Show entitled "Good Night"! They'll discuss the early history of The Simpsons, from Matt Groening's attempt to retain publishing rights to his other characters, and Dan Castellaneta's Walter Matthau-like voice for Homer, to the strange look of the characters and the reason the shorts were never given an official release. So take a trip back to April 19, 1987 and see where it all started! And don't let the bed bugs bite!

You Can't Do That On Television: Pop Music
Wednesday Jun 22, 2016
Wednesday Jun 22, 2016
Join Shawn and Scott as they take a look back at a magical time in the history of Nickelodeon, back in the early 80's when a low budget Canadian sketch show for kids dared to defy convention, prompting many to say its title: "You Can't Do That On Television"! Listen as they break down the episode entitled "Pop Music", which most notably, was the television debut of a young Alanis Morrisette! They'll talk about Alanis' short run on the show, the history of the infamous green slime, and how it ended up becoming intertwined with Nickelodeon's identity as a network, how the longtime kid host, Christine McGlade, pretty much got the job accidentally, and how this show was heavily influenced by Monty Python's Flying Circus and Laugh In. So many sketches, so many that wouldn't be aired today! So relax in your dungeon, avoid saying "I don't know", and enjoy this slice of 80's nostalgia along with us! I heard that!
